It is with pleasure that Naalakkersuisut, Government of Greenland, can announce that the U.S. government has decided to allocate $ 12.1 million, corresponding to approx. DKK 83 million for civilian projects in Greenland.
Naalakkersuisut has chosen to accept the offer of cooperation from the U.S. Government.
The U.S. is focusing on sectors in Greenland that will benefit the economic development of Greenland, including the mineral industry, tourism and education. The actual implementation of the projects will be conducted in close cooperation with Naalakkersuisut, based on existing agreements.
Premier of Greenland Kim Kielsen says: “It takes time to develop closer relationships with other countries. But this good news confirms that our work on building a constructive relationship with the United States is fruitful. It is positive that the increased cooperation between Greenland and the U.S. is reflected in tangible results in the form of funding for projects in Greenland. "
The upcoming civilian projects for collaborations must be seen, among other things, as a result of the Memoranda of Understandings (MOUs) concluded in June 2019 between Naalakkersuisut and the U.S. State Department.
The funding for projects in Greenland must also be considered as a results of the increased cooperation between Naalakkersuisut and the U.S. since the establishment of the Greenland representation in Washington DC., which is now reciprocated the in the form of American interest in opening a consulate in Nuuk.
The funds are expected to be implemented primarily as consultancy and advisory assistance from US experts, as well as through existing programs under the US State Department.
