The Veterinary and Food Authority

The Veterinary and Food Authority in Greenland (VFMG) is the authority appointed by the Government of Greenland that is responsible for national food safety, veterinary emergency preparedness and animal welfare.
The responsibility for veterinary and food matters is shared between the Government of Greenland and the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration holds supreme authority in terms of approval and inspection of meat and fish establishments, including factory vessels that are approved for export.

VFMG handles the following tasks:

Food:
  • Food businesses and providers of primary products - approval, guidance and inspection of food businesses that produce for the domestic market.
    Reach out to VFMG if you are starting or taking over a food business.

  • Food safety – emergency preparedness and public information services on recalled foods among others. Infection tracking in case of an outbreak of foodborne illness.
  • Meat inspection – meat inspection at slaughterhouses of all meats intended for the domestic market. Meats sold on the local meat markets are not subject to inspection.
  • Veterinary border control - border control of external vessels wishing to enter fish and fish products into the EU. Learn more about veterinary border control HERE.
Veterinary matters:
  • Animal welfare - inspection and guidance. Applies to all animals, particularly inspection of sled dogs in the sled dog districts as well as livestock and pets in Greenland.
  • Animal welfare- If you observe an animal subjected to unnecessary suffering, not properly cared for, or mistreated you can file a report with VFMG.
  • Clinical and medical services - for sled dogs, sheep dogs and farm animals. Please be aware that VFMG cannot provide veterinary care for your pet(s).
  • Veterinary disease preparedness - monitoring and reporting of compulsorily notifiable diseases to various international agencies.
  • Zoonoses - monitoring, reporting and control of zoonoses (diseases that are transmissible between humans and animals) e.g. rabies. Learn more about reporting suspected cases of rabies here
Services:
  • Trophy health certificates - VFMG is authorized by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration to issue health certificates for game trophies etc. Learn more about issuance of health certificates here.
  • Food exports – export of foods to the Greenlandic patients' hotels in Denmark in collaboration with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.
  • Information concerning veterinary and food matters - including entry and exit with animals as well as import and export of foods.
