Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities

The Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities was established on the 1st of January 2013 after Inatsisartut adopted an amendment to the Mineral Resource Act. The Environmental Agency is an agency under the Ministry of Nature and Environment.

Together the Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities and the The Mineral License and Safety Authority form the Mineral Resource Authority in Greenland. The legal basis governing the Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities is the Mineral Resource Act and provisions laid down under the Act.

The Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities cooperates closely with DCE/Danish Center for Environment and Energy (http://dce.au.dk/en/authorities/greenland/) and with the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GN), Pinngortitaleriffik (http://www.natur.gl/en/). The cooperation implements the provisions of the Mineral Resource Act stating that assessments and decisions of the Mineral Resources Authority regarding environmental issues must be based on assessments and proposals for decisions from one or more scientific and independent environmental institutions.

The Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities also cooperates with the Ministry of Nature and Climate within the Ministry of Nature and Environment, and with The Mineral License and Safety Authority.
The aim is i.e. to ensure a continued focus on protection of the environment and nature and on developing society on a scientific and sustainable basis respecting human conditions of life and respecting preservation of animal and plant life. Furthermore, the environmental competences within the area of the Mineral Resources Authority are rooted in a professional cooperation with the general environmental authority.

If you wish to apply for a license under the Mineral Resource Act as a citizen or a company you must apply with the The Mineral Licence and Safety Authority (http://www.govmin.gl/). The Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum coordinates the processing of applications etc. with other authorities, including the Environmental Agency for Mineral Resource Activities.
